Ingredients

For the cake
  • 1 box (15.25 oz) spice cake mix
  • 1 cup water
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 eggs large
For the caramel soak
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup caramel sauce divided
For the topping
  • 1 can (21 oz) apple pie filling
  • 1 tub (8 oz) frozen whipped topping thawed

Equipment

  • 1 9x13-inch baking dish
  • 1 electric mixer

Method

Make the cake
  1. Heat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  3. Beat the spice cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs in a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared dish.
  5. Bake for 28–33 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Make the caramel soak
  1. While the cake is still warm, poke holes about 1 inch apart all over it with the handle of a wooden spoon.
  2. Whisk the sweetened condensed milk with 3/4 cup of the caramel sauce.
  3. Pour the mixture evenly over the cake so it fills the holes.
  4. Let the cake cool to room temperature.
  5. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
Add the topping
  1. Spread the apple pie filling evenly over the chilled cake.
  2. Spread the thawed whipped topping over the apple filling.
  3. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  4. Drizzle the remaining 1/4 cup caramel sauce over the cake just before serving.

Notes

For clean slices, chill the cake thoroughly before serving. Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days; freezing is not recommended because the whipped topping may change texture. For a gluten-free version, use a gluten-free spice cake mix.
