Homemade Chocolate Syrup

Homemade chocolate syrup comes together on the stovetop with cocoa, sugar, and water, then thickens as it cools. Whisk constantly while it simmers for a smooth, pourable topping for ice cream, milk, and desserts.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup water
  • 0.125 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Method

  1. Whisk the sugar, cocoa powder, water, and salt together in a small saucepan until smooth.
  2. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, whisking often.
  3. Reduce the heat and simmer for 3 to 5 minutes, whisking constantly, until slightly thickened.
  4. Remove the pan from the heat.
  5. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Cool before serving, as the syrup thickens further as it cools.

Notes

Whisk constantly during simmering to keep the syrup smooth. Refrigerate in an airtight jar for up to 2 weeks; freezer-friendly. For a lower-sugar variation, use a granulated sugar substitute designed for 1:1 baking.
