Ingredients

For the hot chocolate
  • 8 Oreo cookies
  • 4 cups whole milk divided
  • 4 ounces semisweet chocolate chips
  • 0.125 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the topping
  • 1 cup whipped cream
  • 4 Oreo cookies crushed

Equipment

  • 1 blender
  • 1 3-quart saucepan

Method

Make the hot chocolate
  1. Blend 8 Oreo cookies with 1 cup of the milk until the cookies are finely ground.
  2. Pour the mixture into a 3-quart saucepan.
  3. Whisk in the remaining 3 cups milk, chocolate chips, and salt.
  4. Heat over medium-low, whisking often, for 5 to 7 minutes, until steaming and the chocolate is melted, without letting it boil.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
Top and serve
  1. Divide the hot chocolate among 4 mugs.
  2. Top each with 1/4 cup whipped cream and sprinkle with the crushed Oreo cookies.

Notes

For the smoothest drink, keep whisking and do not let the hot chocolate boil. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days; freezing is not recommended because the dairy may separate. For a dairy-free version, use dairy-free milk and whipped topping, and check that the chocolate chips are dairy-free.
